How to Choose the Right Encoding Format for HD Surveillance

In high definition surveillance systems, it is necessary to carefully select a suitable encoding format to improve the efficiency of image processing and transmission. At present, two encoding technologies are widely used: MPEG4 and H.264. These technologies are roughly equivalent in maturity, and the compressed image shows a slightly higher requirement for bandwidth, but there is a certain difference in product prices. When making a selection, the system size, network environment and overall economic factors should be taken into account.

At present, H.264 has the best performance in high definition surveillance encoding and has the highest compression efficiency. Compared with MPEG2 and MPEG4, H.264 has the highest data compression ratio and can achieve a higher data compression ratio. For the same image quality, the data compression ratio of H.264 is 2 to 3 times higher than MPEG-2 used in the current DVD system and 1.5 to 2 times higher than MPEG-4. Due to this characteristic, video data compressed with H.264 requires less bandwidth during network transmission and is more economical.

For example, for 720P encoding, MPEG-4 requires a transfer rate of 6Mbps, while H.264 requires only about 3Mbps. Of course, the decoding algorithm of H.264 is relatively complex and has high requirements for encoding performance. But even at a low bit rate, H.264 can ensure the overall real-time high-definition image quality, which cannot be compared with M-JPEG and MPEG-4 compression methods.

OOSSXX's home wireless solar-powered, battery-powered and POE-powered security cameras use the next-generation advanced H.265+ video compression standard to save capacity, and can record for more than twice as long as conventional H.264 while maintaining image quality. When the HDD is full, the previous data is automatically overwritten. IP67 waterproof and dustproof specifications are strong waterproof levels, and there is no harmful effect even in bad weather such as rain and wind. It can be installed both outdoors and indoors. It is possible to add 8 cameras. From OOSSXX's perspective, we believe that choosing H.264 encoding technology is the most valuable choice for high-definition surveillance systems, which can improve image processing and transmission efficiency while maintaining economical and effective characteristics.
