How do we explain the resolution of security cameras?

We are often confused when we hear others describe the resolution of a security camera, because sometimes the resolution of a security camera ends with P, sometimes with W, and sometimes with K. Moreover, why are some 800W and others 1200W even though they are both 4K cameras?

Before we can answer these questions, we first need to understand what these three letters stand for:

P: This represents the number of vertical pixel rows in an image. For example, 1080P indicates 1080 vertical pixel rows.
K: Approximately how many thousands of row pixels (equivalents) there are horizontally. For example, 2K is 2000, 4K is 4000, and so on.
W: This represents the product of the horizontal and vertical pixels of the camera, and how many W indicates how many hundreds of thousands of pixels there are. For example, 200W is roughly 1920x1080 ≈ 200W, and 400W is roughly 2560x1440 ≈ 400W.

In the television world, these "K"s usually refer to the 16:9 television standard, with 2K corresponding to 1920x1080 and 4K corresponding to 3840x2160.

However, the actual security camera standard may not strictly follow the 16:9 TV standard. Therefore, the same 4K camera may have a resolution of 4000x3000 ≈ 1200W, or 4096×2160 ≈ 800W. They both have 4K pixels horizontally, but the pixels vertically are different. This means that the screen ratio is also different. For 1200W, the ratio is about (1.33), and for 800W, it is about (1.865).

In short, to judge the pixels of a camera, you need to grasp the vertical and horizontal pixels at the same time. Therefore, when choosing a camera, you should pay more attention to these two pixel parameters.
